Abstract

Ralstonia solanacearum (Yabuuchi et al., 1995) is considered one of the most important phytosanitary problems affecting Musaceae and constitutes a potential problem for those countries or areas in which it is present. The main musk-producing centers in Venezuela are concentrated in the South zone of Lake Maracaibo (Zulia, Trujillo, Mérida and Táchira), this region contributes about 70 % of the national production. The work was carried out in the Phytosanitary Diagnostic Laboratory of San Cristóbal, Táchira State, Venezuela, in order to identify the causal agent of the effects of banana plantations (Musa AAB) in two municipalities. Two samples were analyzed, one from the Rubio municipality and another from the San Cristóbal municipality. The samples were processed according to the methodologies established in the Operational Normalization Procedures (PNO) for the diagnosis of phytopathogenic bacteria in the laboratory. Dry leaves were observed and others with a green-yellow color, as well as leaves folded downwards in the form of umbrella. In cross sections made to the shoot a dark brown color could be seen in the vascular bundles. White, extended, pinkish-centered, irregularly growing colonies were observed on Kelman medium with terazolium plates. As a result of the morphological and biochemical tests, as well as the analysis of symptoms observed in the samples, the presence of the quarantined bacterium Ralstonia solanacearum was verified, which is the first report of this organism in Musaceae in the State.
