Abstract

Soybean rusts are caused by Phakospora pachyrhizi and P. meibomiae, known as Asian and American soybean rust respectively. P. pachyrhizi is the most aggressive of both species and one of the pathogens that cause highest yield losses in many soybean-growing areas of the world. This specie has quarantenary importance for Cuba and due to this, since 2006 exist an Asian soybean rust national surveillance program. In the present report, the results of this surveillance program in the period of 2006-2014 is shown. Legumes with rust symptoms were sampled in different provinces of Cuba. Phakopsora spp. specimens were identified by its morphological characteristics and with the QuickStix kit. Before of the analysis of 598 samples of legumes, P. pachyrhizi was identified affecting soybean fields in Matanzas, Villa Clara, Ciego de Avila and Sancti Spíritus provinces, and in cowpea fields in Matanzas and Cienfuegos. P. meibomiae was detected on bean, lima bean, cowpea and soybean fields in Mayabeque, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus, Ciego de Ávila, Camagüey, Holguín, Granma and Santiago de Cuba provinces. This is the first report of the presence of P. meibomiae on Cuban lima bean fields.
