Abstract
A survey was made in areas of ornamentals plants and flowers for cut, in the provinces of La Habana and Cienfuegos, Cuba. It was observed that several of these plants exhibit symptoms similar to those caused by viral diseases. Samples of suspected materials were taken to the laboratory to confirm the viral nature of these diseases and identify the causal viruses, using indicator plants, ELISA-DAS and ultrastructural analysis of leaf tissues by transmission electron microscopy. These assays determined the presence of Dasheen mosaic virus in Alocasia macrorhiza, Cucumber mosaic virus in ornamental pepper (Capsicum frutescens), periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus), Callistephus hortensis, Gerbera jamesoni and Aeonium arboretum, and Hibiscus green spot virus in Hibiscus rosa sinensis.
