Hospedantes alternativos de Phakopsora pachyrhizi en campos de soya (Glycine max) de la provincia de Ciego de Ávila, Cuba
Main Article Content
Abstract
Soybean rust, caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi was reported in Cuba in 2009. Since then, it has been found affecting soybean fields in municipalities of Matanzas, Villa Clara, Cienfuegos and Ciego de Ávila provinces. Wild leguminous species have been reported internationally as alternative hosts of this rust, but these hosts had not been so far identified in Cuba. During a new outbreak of the disease occurred in Venezuela municipality in Ciego de Avila in January 2011, rust symptoms containing anamorphic sori and uredospores (Malupa-type) with morphological characteristics matching with those described for P. pachyrhizi, were found on Desmodium sp. (clover) subfamily Faboideae; Cassia occidentalis L. (coffee senna) subfamily Cesalpinioideae and Macroptilium lathyroides (L.) Urb. (wild bushbean) family Fabaceae. Positive reactions were obtained when samples of these three species affected plants were analyzed with inmunocromatographic strips with a specific antibody against P. pachyrhizi. These plants are alternative hosts of P. pachyrhizi in Cuba and can maintain the disease under favorable conditions between soybean cropping seasons, and could serve as potential inoculum sources for successive diseases cycles. This is the first report of alternative host in Cuba for Asian soybean rust.
