Manejo de la mancha anular de la papaya mediante el uso de malla antiáfidos en viveros de Carica papaya L. var. Maradol Roja

Abstract
Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) is transmitted by several aphid species in a non persistent manner and the arrival of winged insects in the initial stage of papaya plantations constitutes an obstacle for its production. The objective of this investigation was to determine the effect of papaya nursery protection with anti-aphids mesh on the incidence and severity of PRSV in commercial plantations of papaya var. Maradol Roja. In this regards, evaluations every 15 days, during 300 days after transplant (dat) were carried out in plantations coming from nursery covered and uncovered with a anti-aphids mesh. The first symptomatic plants were observed at 90 dat in the plantation coming from uncovered nursery, with a retard of 90 days in the plantation coming from protected nursery. At 195 dat, in the plantation without nursery management 100% of PRSV incidence was observed and in the plantation coming from protected nursery this value was registered at 300 dat. When concluding the evaluations, in the plantation coming from nursery without protection a disease severity of 93,40% was calculated, which decreased in 30% in the plantation with nursery protection. The use of anti-aphids mesh constitutes an effective method to produce PRSV free papaya plants and foment plantations that escape temporarily to the disease in areas of high vectors insect incidence and strong pressure of inoculum.
