Abstract

The use of greenhouse tecnology in melon (Cucumis melo) crop has brought up the presence of foliage diseases which have not been a problem up to now. That is the case of powdery mildew of the cucurbits (Sphaerotheca fuliginea). Six races have been reported worldwide. This research has the objective of determining which races affected melon plants in crop protected of Horticulture Research Institute “Liliana Dimitrova”. The research has been carried out during winter seasons of 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 in A-12 type greenhouse. It was applied a design of randomized block with three repetitions and three plants per replica using the varieties: Gerona, Dimay Halest best, Charenlí F1 and its parents together by differential series to determine races. Symptoms evaluation was checked periodically in each cultivar once they appeared; using Bohn and Whitaker scale to evaluate powdery mildew in cucurbits. Results showed the presence of races 4 and 5 in 2003 and race 5 in 2004. The hybrid Charenlí and its female parent showed a high level of resistance to this disease, while the rest showed an intermediate behavior.
