Recognition and Evaluation of New Lesions in Cassava Cultivars in the Municipality of Santo Domingo

Abstract
In recent years, lesions have been observed in the cassava reserving roots (Manihot esculenta Crantz) which could constitute serious threats in obtaining high quality yields in the future. The objective of this research was to determine which insects cause these lesions, as well as to evaluate the response of cassava cultivars to the incidence of these pests. The work was carried out in areas of the Research Institute of Tropical Roots and Tuber Crops (INIVIT), between January 2017 and January 2018. At harvest time, the reserving roots were carefully checked in order to recognize the lesions and identify the causal pathogen that provoked them. In the case of observing the lesions and not detecting the insect, the soil was sampled. In addition, the response of cassava cultivars to the incidence of new pests was evaluated. Larvae of Pachnaeus spp. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were identified, feeding on the cortex of the reserving roots, with non-significant degrees of attacks. The larvae scrape the root cortex and sometimes pierce it. The damaged root loses quality, does not soften on the affected part and turns yellow. For the first time, Lagochirus dezayasi Dillon (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is reported consuming reserving roots of cassava. The lesions carried out by the larvae of this insect were distributed in 4.16 % of the roots of the cultivar Señorita.
