Abstract

Black Sigatoka (BS) caused by Mycosphaerella fijiensis Morelet (Mf) is the most important disease of banana and plantains. In Cuba exist more than 12 thousand planted of FHIA hybrids with partial resistance and hence, the pressure of selection of pathotypes with an increased aggressiveness could be considered to be high. Experimental plots with susceptible and partially resistant cultivars in Alquízar and Güira de Melena in Havana province, La Cuba in Ciego de Avila, and Baracoa in Guantánamo were established where disease severity and the fructifications development in the spots were assessed. A laboratory experiment under controlled conditions using leaf fragments of Grand Nain and FHIA 18 placed on agar + benzimidazole in plastic Petri plates and inoculated with conidial suspensions belonging to single ascospore isolates from wild Mf populations and partial resistant cultivars showing strongly BS attack were carried out where he amount of lesions and the speed of evolution of symptoms were daily assessed. FHIA cultivars in the two localities of Havana and in Baracoa showed a high resistant reaction to the disease meanwhile the level of attack and the pseudothecia production in Ciego de Avila was similar to Cavendish cultivars, and more severe than the observed in 1994/95, when the cultivars these cultivars were introduced in Cuba for first time. Conidial inoculations on Grand Nain and FHIA 18 leaf fragments with isolates from the strongly attacked FHIA 18 plants from Ciego de Avila and from Cavendish cultivars (wild type) showed the higher aggressiveness of the former. This is considered the first report of a change of aggressiveness of Mf populations or the erosion of the partial resistance to BS in the FHIA 18 cultivar.
