Populational dynamics of phytophagous and predatory mites in avocado (Persea americana Miller)
Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of the present work was to establish the population dynamics of phytophagous and predatory mites present in the cultivation of avocado (Persea americana Miller). Biweekly sampling was performed, where 30 mature leaves were extracted; one for each cardinal point plus one in the inner zone of the tree. The leaves were reviewed under a stereoscopic microscope and the amount of mites present was counted and the adults were collected in 85% lactic acid and then fixed preparations were made in Hoyer’s medium for taxonomic identification. Six species of phytophagous mites were detected: Oligonychus cubensis Livschitz, 1968, Oligonychus yothersi (McGregor, 1914), Eutetranychus banksi (McGregor, 1914), Tetranychus sp., Brevipalpus sp. and eriophes mite not identificate. A complex of predatory mites was associated with them, represented mainly by the family Phytoseiidae with eight species and Euseius hibisci Chant, 1959 as more frequent species. Was observed synchrony between the population movements of phytophagous and predatory mites, evidencing favorable conditions for biological control. In the analysis of principal components, the minimum and average relative humidity were shown to have correlation with the pest in a negative way, while maximum temperature favored the increase of populations. These results constitute important elements to pest management strategy.
